Why are there so many stupid things?
I don’t have any big posts today, at least not so far, but I did find one jewel of information off of a post at Marginal Revolution that I personally found very interesting. It seems that the state officials in New Jersey decided to enact new legislation of some sort that made the New Jersey state vegetable a tomato. As pointed out by Tyler from Marginal Revolution, tomatoes are definitely not a vegetable and are in fact a fruit. My question is how do the people in charge of this pick a fruit as a state vegetable? To me it just doesn’t work at all, and their excuse listed by Mr. Cowen saying that tomatoes were subject to tariffs on vegetables, and I guess therefore qualify as vegetables is a definitely a good point that makes some sense, but not enough to cover their mistake in not making it their new state fruit. Maybe they already liked their state fruit, the blueberry, too much to change it to a tomato, so it got pushed into vegetable position, and they figured no one would care. I do care and though I don’t even live near New Jersey I would much rather see them move the tomato to the official position as state second favorite fruit then see it kept as it currently is in the state vegetable category. By the way, what is California’s official state fruit?

hmm that is very interesting, maybe they just thought that no one would care or notice, but i agree with you that they like their original state fruit more, and didnt like the state vegetable as much as the tomato. so they just thought it worked out better this way. and i have no idea what our state fruit is, but it i had to guess i would say strawberry, or orange??

i like tomatoes… fruit or vegetable…. if they’re a fruit, then why are they always with celery, carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli… you can’t dip fruit in ranch but you can dip tomatoes so therefore, regardless of what any scientist says, they are definatly a vegetable. i say these things… amen

And the Saber-Tooth Cat is the official state fossil and we have a state theater and all of this other stuff but no State Fruit, how lame is that?!
